The Big Boss (1971, 唐山大兄, a.k.a. Fists of Fury in the U.S., not to be confused with Fist of Fury) was Bruce Lee's first major film. It tells the story of Cheng, a Chinese man from Guangdong who goes to work in an ice house in Thailand, along with his his cousins. This operation turns out to be a cover for drug smuggling. Workers who discover the truth are murdered. When his cousins suspect this, they too are secretly killed. Discovering Cheng's fighting skills, the Big Boss of the title attempts to lure him with a promotion and prostitutes, but Cheng is told the truth. A final showdown ensues when Cheng's girlfriend is kidnapped by the boss.
The film was based on the true story of Cheng Chiu-on (鄭潮安) who fought the tyrants in Thailand. Cheng lived at the end of the 1800s and beginning of the 20th century. A memorial statue of him was erected in a garden in the Bangkok more than 80 years ago.
