Hillsborough is a town located in San Mateo County, California. It is located seventeen miles outside of San Francisco. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 10,825.

The singer Bing Crosby raised his second family at a fourteen roomed mansion, set within a three acre estate in Hillsborough.

The heiress and onetime kidnapping victim Patty Hearst grew up primarily in Hillsborough.

A northern California town of the same name but alternate spelling ("Hillsboro") was the setting for the first Scream movie. However, whether this is a coincidence or intentional is not known.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 16.1 km² (6.2 mi²). 16.1 km² (6.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there are 10,825 people, 3,689 households, and 3,161 families residing in the town. The population density is 670.9/km² (1,738.7/mi²). There are 3,804 housing units at an average density of 235.8/km² (611.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 71.80% White, 0.50% African American, 0.06% Native American, 24.04% Asian, 0.23% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 2.67% from two or more races. 2.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,689 households out of which 36.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 78.6% are married couples living together, 4.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 14.3% are non-families. 11.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.93 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 19.7% from 25 to 44, 32.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $193,157, and the median income for a family is $200,000+. Fulltime male workers have a median income of $100,000+ versus $55,882 for fulltime female workers. The per capita income for the town is $98,643. 2.8% of the population and 1.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.7% of those under the age of 18 and 0.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Hillsborough was the highest income place with a population of 10,000 or more in 2000.
