Plot

When Gabriella (Vanessa Anne Hudgens) starts at a new high school, she gets more than she bargained for. Gabriella is a brilliant student and immediately becomes one of the “brainiacs,” or social outcasts, as it is in most high schools. Troy (Zac Efron) is the star basketball player at East High, and as we all know, the “jocks” and the “brainiacs” don’t mix. Troy is expected to keep his allegiance to the team and the cheerleaders, but sometimes a guy has to do what a guy has to do.

The school musical is the place where it all comes apart – or together – depending on whose perception you want to follow. Gabriella loves to sing, and so does Troy, but the lead parts have always gone to spoiled Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and her brother Ryan (Lucas Grabeel). This year they get some unexpected competition from Gabriella and Troy.

Troy just wants to follow his heart, which is with singing – and with Gabriella. But when their prospective peer groups decide all is not right with this new situation, they step in to break up whatever happiness the two have found with their singing and with each other.

Facts and Zac Efron / Andrew Seeley controversy

  • Disney Channel's most successful movie to date, High School Musical was the number one show on cable for the week of January 16th '06 to January 22nd '06, with 7.7 million viewers in its broadcast (beating heavyweights like Monk, WWE, and Spongebob). Its second showing was number two in ratings for the week, while the third was number seven. These numbers along with information regarding the unexpected and remarkable success of the soundtrack can be found at the official website of Ashley Tisdale (the actress who played Sharpay) in an in an Official Press Release [1].
  • The movie was filmed at East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, but the setting takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico. East High School was also the name of the school in the movie.
  • Some controversy has arisen over whether Zac Efron (who played Troy) actually sang on the tracks. Many believe Andrew Seeley is the actual singer because of his name being listed as 'Troy (Voice)' in the High School Musical entry for IMDB, and also because he helped create the music for the movie. The singer said as much in a MySpace entry[2]. However, if you go here[3] and listen to Breaking Free, you can clearly tell it's Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens. It's obvious their voices don't harmonize well and that is why Andrew Seeley was brought in to help Zac on the tracks. Therefore, both Andrew and Zac sang on the CD/movie, not one or the other.
  • In the February 18th, 2006 issue, Billboard Magazine changed the song credits to reflect Andrew Seeley's contribution. Andrew is now listed as the lead vocalist on Getcha' Head in the Game and as an additional vocalist on Breaking Free and Start Of Something New.

No lip, kiss action at the end!
