Frat Pack

The Television & Movie Wiki: for TV, celebrities, and movies.

The Frat Pack (rarely referred to as the Slacker Pack) is a nickname given to a group of Hollywood actors, mostly men, who have appeared together in many movies since the mid 1990s. It was coined by USA Today in a story from June 2004.[1]

The name is a take-off of the Rat Pack, a nickname given to a group of performers that included Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin in the 1950s and 1960s, combined with the shorthand term for a college fraternity. The implication is that this group is a cross between the cool, hipness of stars in the past and the sophomoric or outrageous antics of more recent stars. The name is also a reference to the group's quintessential film, Old School. Another deviation from the Rat Pack moniker was the 1980's Brat Pack.

*On the October 2nd, 2005 episode of Saturday Night Live, Steve Carell performed a song during his monologue segment about his success. The song named every member of the Frat Pack other than Luke Wilson, with Carell singing about how he is 'one of those guys now.' Some took this, along with the success of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, as evidence that Carell should be considered to be one of the members. One noteworthy person who holds this belief is Kevin Crossman, the man who runs the Frat Pack Tribute Site, which is largely considered to be the most devoted source of information on the group.

Movies

Some Frat Pack movies include:

The members of The Frat Pack often work with certain directors multiple times. Todd Phillips directed both Old School and Starsky & Hutch. Adam McKay directed Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and is behind the upcoming High, Wide, and Handsome. Jay Roach directed both Meet The Parents and Meet The Fockers and is directing the upcoming Used Guys. Judd Apatow is the writer/producer of several Frat Pack comedies like The Cable Guy and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. He made his directorial debut with The 40-Year-Old Virgin starring Steve Carell.

Note

Entertainment Weekly referred to this group as the Slacker Pack before USA Today dubbed them the Frat Pack. Meanwhile, EW calls Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Edward Norton, and Ryan Phillippe the Frat Pack, but this usage has not been seen elsewhere.
