Elle is the younger sister of Dakota Fanning. Elle began acting by playing the younger version of Dakota's roles, for instance in flashbacks to Dakota's character's birth. When Dakota started acting in movies, Elle had two roles playing younger versions of Dakota's character. Later, Elle auditioned for and won her own roles in other feature films. In fact, in The Door in the Floor (2004), Elle's part had originally been written for twins as it was believed that the workload would be too much for one little girl to handle. Elle was so impressive that the role was changed to just one girl just for her. Elle says that Dakota is her favourite actress and that Elle would like to act alongside Dakota one day. They have not yet appeared in a film sharing scenes together, although they did dub a film together, voicing sisters.
